At 0520 hours on the 1st March 1997 I attended Newport Central Police
Station following a call from Paul EVANS (Newport Scenes of Crime).
At 0620 hours I attended 8 Cormorant Way, Newport, where the
circumstances surrounding the death of Matthew "THOMPSON were explained to me by Detective Superintendent Keith DIXON. I was told that the occupants of 8 Cormorant Way were Cindy PAGINTON and Matthew John THOMPSON. Apparently Cindy PAGINTON'S brother, Paul David PAGINTON, had also been at the address during the course of the night following a domestic argument between Matthew THOMPSON and Paul PAGINTON which had been heard by the neighbours, who having come round to the house,
separated the two men and took Ctndy PAGINTON and Paul PAGINTON around to their house to "cool down". A knife was also recovered by them. Some time after this Paul PAGINTON returned to 8 Cormorant Way at which time further noises were heard. The neighbour again came around and this time found Matthew THOMPSON collapsed on the floor.The house was a two-storey terraced house consisting of a
