Statement from PC Alun Davies
I am Police Constable 708 of the Gwent Constabulary currently
stationed at Duffryn.
At 3.29am on Saturday 1st March 1997, and in company with PC328
GALEMAY, I made my way to 8 Cormorant Way, Duffryn, Newport in
response to a call. On my arrival, I was approached by one Melvyn
COURT who stated that someone had died. I entered the address, where I saw lying on the floor, inside the doorway, a man I now know as the
deceased, Matthew THOMPSOM. THOMPSON had no clothing to his upper
body, and was covered in blood. There was also blood, saturating the inner front doormat. I saw a clean cut (approx 2" wide) to THOMPSON'S neck.
At this point several other people in the house, made themselves
known to me, being:- Cindy PAGINTON - occupier, and two neighbours, Tina COURT and Mark SMITH. Miss PAGINTON was hysterical, and on my instructions. Miss COURT took her to the kitchen at the rear of the house. I made a check for any vital signs of THOMPSON, but found none.
