Statement from Sgt. Jeffery Newton

I am a Police Sergeant in the Gwent Constabulary, presently
stationed at the Central Police Station, Newport.

At 3.28 am on Saturday 1st March 1997, I was on duty in uniform,
in company with PC 432 ROBBINS, when as the result of a radio message, I went to no. 8 Cormorant Way, Duffryn, Newport.

On arrival, I saw that all the lights were on in the house and
that the front door was open.

I entered the house, through the front door and immediately saw
the body of the person I now know to be Matthew John THOMPSON, lying on his back in the hallway. The body and hallway was covered in blood.

In the house were the persons I now know to be the witnesses,
Cindy PAGINTON, Tina COURT and Melvin COURT, together with PC 328GALLWEY and PC 708 DAVIES.
